Kiva is the world's first person-to-person microlending website, empowering individuals to lend to entrepreneurs around the world.
Problem: Nearly 3 billion adults around the world do not have access to basic banking services. The inability to access financial resources in a low cost and dignified manner perpetuates the cycle of poverty.
Program: Kiva is a non-profit organization working to alleviate poverty by connecting people through lending. Leveraging the internet, and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva enables individuals to lend as little as $25 to entrepreneurs around the world to help create opportunity. As loans are repaid, lenders receive updates about the entrepreneurs they support, and money can be loaned again to another entrepreneur.
Progress:As of October 2011, there are 1 million registered Kiva users around the world! Kiva has facilitated nearly $250 million in loans to over 600,000 borrowers in 60 countries. Currently, loans made through Kiva.org have a 98% repayment rate.
