Problem:
Forty percent of all trips Americans make are two miles or less, yet only 1% of all trips are made by bike, a statistic PeopleForBikes is working to change. By expanding the country's network of innovative and well-designed bicycle facilities, PeopleForBikes aims to make bicycling an easy and common choice.
Program:
PeopleForBikes is a movement to unite millions of people to transform America through bicycling.
Bicycling is great for health, good for communities, and a solution to many of our most pressing societal and environmental problems. Although millions of Americans recognize these benefits, and love to ride their bikes, only a fraction of those who ride have stood up to help improve bicycling in America. To bridge this gap and make our country a better place for all who ride, PeopleForBikes is gathering these supporters to speak with one powerful voice—to make bicycling safer, more convenient and appealing for everyone.
Progress:Bicycling in the U.S.—especially in cities—is growing and getting better. Between 2001 and 2009, the number of annual trips made by bicycle doubled, from 2 billion to 4 billion. During the same time, bicycle commuting in the 90 largest cities grew 63%. In those cities that do the most to encourage bicycling, bike commuting grew 77%. And more and more cities are using the bicycle as a way to revitalize and reinvent their downtowns.
